Main Idea
Reading fast without missing key ideas
Skim the structure first. Slow down only on the parts that matter.
Read the first and last sentence
Most paragraphs telegraph their point in the first sentence and reinforce it in the last. Skim those first to get the structure of the passage before reading the middle.
Look for transition words
But, however, although, in contrast — these signal a shift. Words like therefore, thus, in conclusion signal a key claim. Slow down at transitions.
Don't memorize the passage
You can re-read. Get the structure first, find the answer second. Trying to remember every detail wastes time.
Track the author's stance
Is the author arguing for something, against something, or just describing? Knowing the stance kills several wrong answers immediately.
