Match the claim to the line

An evidence question gives you four lines from the passage. The right line is the one that, if removed, would weaken the claim. Test each one: 'does this directly prove the claim?'

The directness test

The right evidence answers the claim with the FEWEST extra steps. If you have to assume something extra to make a line support the claim, that line is not the best evidence.

Don't be moved by tone

An emotional or vivid line is often a trap. The most quotable line is not always the most logically supportive line. Pick by logic, not by what stands out.
